Remote Court Hearings

This service allows litigants to find out the dates of distance hearings by videoconference and to attend hearings remotely. The access link is posted on the official portal of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.



The service is provided using two applications: MeetMe and Webex. A link is sent to you through the notice to attend the case.

First: Technical Readiness


1. Ensuring the quality of attendance requirements and the necessary technical readiness
Ensuring the quality of attendance requirements and the necessary technical readiness through the use of electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, computer connected to the Internet, microphone, camera, headset).

  • So that the sound and picture are of a high degree of clarity and the Internet speed is adequate
  • It is recommended to test the device readiness prior to entering the remote hearing by conducting a trial on the system, click here
  • The ID card and the power of attorney must be prepared in advance for immediate review. It is recommended to save a copy of the same under PDF format and send them to the court upon request.


2. Internet Browsers

Safari
Safari must be used for Apple devices (iPhone - iPad - Macintosh system).
Google Chrome
You must use Google Chrome browser if you are connecting from a personal computer (PC) or a laptop operating under Windows, as well as from a smartphone using Android system.




3. Ensuring that the case file is linked to the SmartPass account

To take full advantage of the digital litigation services, please make sure that the case file is linked to the SmartPass account, in order to be able to follow up the file’s movements, and to submit requests digitally, as follows:

 • Natural persons (individuals): through the personal SmartPass account, to link the case file to your SmartPass account, click here.
 • Minors, incapacitated persons or the like: through the SmartPass account of the guardian or the custodian.click here
 • Legal persons (private companies and establishments): through the SmartPass account of the legal representative or the agent authorized to attend click here.

Second: Filing Documents


1. Filing documents prior to the date of the hearing

Proof of identity, briefs, documents, power of attorney and legal representation evidence must be filed before the date of the hearing, at least two working days beforehand, through one of the following communication channels:

 • Electronic Applications on the Case Management System (CMS). To find out how to use it, click here..
 • By depositing briefs via the attached link in the hearing date notice sent by text messaging (SMS). .
 • Link for the filing of briefs sent by text messaging (SMS) to the mobile phone or registered e-mail. To find out how to go through the different steps, click here.
 • The instant file sharing system during the hearing.
 • In the event of audio or video evidence, the court must be notified during the hearing, so that instant sharing technique can be used and the files saved.

2. Preparing the case documents
Ensure that personal identity evidence is ready to be used and filed in the second link sent by text messaging, which are:
 • The ID card is "mandatory"
 • The trade license is "mandatory for companies"
 • The attested power of attorney as evidence of legal representation, such as the Articles of association, judgment appointing a guardian or a custodian.
 • In addition to the briefs or files required to be deposited before the hearing.

Note:
 • Failure to link the case file to the SmartPass account does not prevent submitting briefs
  and documents through the previous channels, with the exception of digital requests to
  the courts, in order to avoid procedural sanctions which may amount to a fine of ten
  thousand dirhams or non-acceptance of what will be submitted outside the time limit.

Third: Persons authorized to attend the remote hearing


1. Civil trials and the like

The following categories may attend:
 • Natural persons (individuals): Personal presence.
 • Minors, incapacitated or incompetent persons and the like, may be represented by the guardian or the custodian
 • Legal persons (private companies and establishments): the legal representative.
 • Sole Proprietorship: Owner of the sole proprietorship.
 • Governmental Entities: a representative of the Government Cases Management.

If the attorney is present:
 • He must be a lawyer duly certified to practice as such in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi..
 • The lawyer’s delegate before the Lawsuit Preparation Section.

For the category of individuals:
A representative from relatives or in-laws up to the fourth degree (father and mother - brother and sister - uncle and aunt – cousin from paternal side - grandfather and grandmother - maternal uncle and aunt - cousin from maternal side).

For the corporate category:
 - Private commercial companies: a UAE national representative who has been working for more than a year in the company.
 - Government-owned companies: a UAE national representative with the status of licensed non-practitioner lawyer.


2. Criminal trials
The following categories may attend:
 • Presence of the accused or the civil claimant in person.
 • Presence of a representative being a registered lawyer practicing in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Note:
In the event of inability to attend a hearing due to a pressing circumstance or a compelling excuse, a message may be sent by e-mail to the court detailing the reason behind such inability to attend the hearing and attach what proves the occurrence of the preventing circumstance or delegate someone to attend the hearing and express the excuse to the court to make the appropriate decision.

3. Attendance of the public
The general public may attend public trial hearings by clicking (link) on the attendance link shown in the list of cases – Roll of the hearings. Click here..
Note:
The attendees must keep silent and refrain from making any recording or filming of the hearing, speaking or doing anything that violates the court's code of conduct or offends its authority, knowing that such a behaviour is deemed a crime punishable by law and could result in penalties up to and including imprisonment.


Ethics of remote hearings


Be dressed in an appropriate attire, according to the circumstances, and avoid wearing the face veil (niqab), face mask or anything that covers the face.

Be seated in a place befitting the standing of the judiciary, away from public or inappropriate places, such as cafés, shops, cars, etc.

All unused phones and devices must turned off while attending remote hearings through videoconference.

Refrain from using any camera or recorder, eating, drinking or smoking. Only water is allowed.

Commitment to attend the hearing at the time specified in advance as notified by a text message, email or by entering through the digital service of the roll of hearings.

After the successful access to the videoconference session, keep calm and listen. The microphone must be kept in "Mute" position, and listen carefully to the court's calling.

Avoid side conversations and not interrupting anyone speaking.

The parties will be called upon according to their turn on the roll. Attendees must keep quiet and listen. If you wish to make a comment or if you encounter a technical defect during the consideration of a particular case, use the chat box to point it out and do not interrupt the hearing.

When your turn to speak arrives, make sure the microphone is in "Unmute" position, answer with "Yes, present" then go back to "Mute" once your turn to speak is over.

Speak respectfully and in a clear and audible voice, after obtaining the court’s permission. The pleadings shall be as brief as possible, unless the court deems it appropriate to question the litigants or seeks precise and detailed explanations.

Note that the remote court hearing is recorded.

Avoid committing any act or making any statement that violates the hearing ethics.

Once the hearing is over, you must "Sign Out" to ensure that you have left the session.

What is the procedure in case the notice to attend the remote hearing is not received?

If the link to attend the hearing is not received, the person concerned can submit a request online indicating the telephone number and the e-mail. The competent employee will send the attendance link containing the date and time of the hearing. The request may also be sent via the e-mail indicated next to the case’s details, indicating the capacity, telephone number and e-mail, and attach copies of the ID card and the power of attorney. Updating your personal data will result in sending all subsequent notifications and announcements to the updated telephone number or email.
What should I do if I cannot enter using the link? Send a message to the employee in charge whose email is indicated in the text message to the mobile phone or e-mail or through the digital service of the roll of hearings.
If the notice is sent to the court user who forwards the message to his or her lawyer or representative, can they use the same link to access the hearing? Yes, they can access the hearing by following the steps and procedures to enter the remote court hearings, click here

What is the period during which the notice must be sent to litigants to attend the hearing? At least 3 days before the date scheduled for the hearing, so that the litigant can prepare the materials he or she wants to present, the secretary can attach what has been submitted in the system and the judge can find out what has been submitted. What is included in the notice to attend a remote court hearing? The notice includes the name of the party, details of the case, the date and time of the hearing, details of the hearing, the password, the link to attend the hearing, a link to file briefs and documents and a link to obtain technical assistance.

How would litigants be able to submit their briefs and documents for the case prior to the hearing? Litigants can send briefs and documents through the link sent to the litigants. They may also possible submit through the Electronic Requests
Can documents be attached during the hearing? Yes, this is possible during the hearing through instant sharing, but it is recommended to file them before the scheduled date of the hearing. It is also possible to make a request through the Electronic Requests
How can I make sure that the secretary received my documents during the hearing? You may ask the secretary or the case manager during the hearing to check the attachments or confirm this with the lawyer or representative. It is not necessary to make sure that the documents and briefs are received, as they are received automatically after you have filed them and clicked on the "Save" button through the link sent to you.
In case the notice to attend the hearing is received without the receiving the claim form and the documents, what action can be taken? Attending the hearing through modern technology tools or through manual hand over upon notification of the parties through traditional notifications methods.
What is the procedure if the judge requests the production of the original documents? The employee in charge will contact you to arrange a date and place for submitting the original documents to the court.

How can the parties find out the decision of the judge at the hearing? Usually the decision is made immediately at the end of the remote hearing. However, the decision may be postponed to the end of the hearing to consider the file. In the event a permission is granted to submit briefs during the deadline, what is the applicable procedure? The specified period must be respected, by filing the briefs and documents through the following channels: -
 1. Electronic applications.
 2. The official e-mail
 3. The official WhatsApp system
How can I pay legal costs in the event of a court decision? A text message (SMS) will be sent to the mobile phone or email registered in the case file, including the link for depositing the cost using your credit or debit card. In the event that the link is not received, you can send a message to the employee in charge via the e-mail indicated on the notice to attend, or by contacting the Call Centre on 600 599 799 or via the official e-mail info@adjd.gov.ae

What language is used in the remote court hearings? The language used during the remote court hearings is the Arabic.
I do not speak Arabic, how can I communicate during the remote court hearing? You can request the assistance of a legal translator who will carry out the translation via videoconference.
What are the fees for an interpreter during the remote hearing and what languages are available? The service is provided free of charge, and there are several languages, subject to prior coordination with the competent employee and the Translation Section. There sign language is also available.
How to apply for the services of a legal translator at a remote court hearing? Submit a request for a legal translator by sending a message to the email indicated in the notice to attend or directly during the remote hearing. The secretary or the case manager will send an invitation to the translator to join the session immediately.

Note:


This service is limited to interpretation during the hearing. As for the translation of briefs and documents, the party shall bear the fees through the legal translators working in licensed translation offices.
