Specialized Jurisdiction

ADJD is keen to support specialised judicial work, with the aim to improve performance and resolve disputes efficiently. Hence, a number of chambers have been established to specialise in disputes related to constructions contracts, banks and financial institutions, shares and securities, insurance and indemnities, intellectual property, child visitation arrangements and partial medical errors. Recently a chamber for disputes involving domestic workers has been established. There are also special chambers for disputes involving government employees and small claims. Moreover, ADJD has concluded a special agreement with the International Council for Sports Arbitration to establish a seat for the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Abu Dhabi, which is the first branch outside the city of Lausanne in Switzerland.

Abu Dhabi Criminal Court

Established pursuant to the decision of the chairman of the Judicial Department No. 11 of 2018. The court consists of a president and a sufficient number of judges and executors of procedures to carry out the necessary administrative and clerical work. Its headquarters are in the city of Abu Dhabi, and it has the same spatial jurisdiction as the Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance and its affiliated courts. The court is composed of circuits for felonies, misdemeanours, and infractions. The court is competent to consider criminal cases in accordance with the Penal Code and special criminal legislation, which fall within the scope of Abu Dhabi city.

Abu Dhabi Criminal Court for External Regions

Established pursuant to the decision of the chairman of the Judicial Department No. 19 of 2020, the court consists of a president and a sufficient number of judges and executors of procedures to carry out the necessary administrative and clerical work and is affiliated with it : the Abu Dhabi Municipality Court, the Abu Dhabi Traffic Court, the Nationality and Residence Court, the Tourism Court, the Bani Yas Court, the Al Wathba Court, the Al Rahba Court, and any specialised criminal court established in the future within the central region. The court is made up of misdemeanours and infractions circuits whose jurisdiction is established in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure and laws that complement it, as well as in accordance with the workload distribution decided by the Judicial Council.
The court is competent to hear:

  • Criminal lawsuits filed for misdemeanours, municipal violations, traffic misdemeanours and violations, tourism misdemeanours and violations, nationality and residency misdemeanours and violations, when the crime was committed inside the external areas in accordance with the definition contained in the article issued in this decision.
  • Criminal offences including violations or misdemeanors, committed within the cities of Baniyas, Al Wathba and Al Rahba..
  • Any other cases that may fall under its mandate in the future according to the distribution of judicial work, as decided by the Council.
  • Abu Dhabi Commercial Court ​

    • The Abu Dhabi Commercial Court was established in Abu Dhabi pursuant to the decision of His Highness the chairman of the Judicial Department No. 28 of 2019 to establish the Abu Dhabi Commercial Court. The Abu Dhabi Commercial Court was established to keep pace with the rapid growth witnessed by the UAE in the business sector and the need to provide effective and innovative judicial services characterised by integrity. The Abu Dhabi Commercial Court consists of partial, major, and appeal circuits. The spatial jurisdiction of the court includes the spatial jurisdiction of the Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance and its affiliated courts. The circuits of these courts may also be classified according to the types of cases brought before them. The court consists of a president and a sufficient number of trial and appeal judges and experts, as well as a sufficient number of administrative staff, translators, and notice servers to carry out the necessary administrative, clerical, and technical work. Even if the business is commercial for one of the parties and civil for the other, the court has the authority to hear such cases. The court is also qualified to consider disagreements, requests, lawsuits, and petitions related to the implementation of foreign judgements, orders, and bonds, whether the judgements were rendered by foreign courts or by foreign arbitral tribunals.


    Abu Dhabi Labour Court​

    The Labour Court was established in Abu Dhabi pursuant to the decision of His Highness, the chairman of the Judicial Department No. 22 of 2018. The spatial jurisdiction of the Labour Court includes the spatial jurisdiction of the Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance and its affiliated courts. The court includes minor, and major first instance circuits, appellate circuits and an execution circuit. The court consists of a president and a sufficient number of judges, administrative staff, c and executors of procedures to carry out the necessary administrative and clerical work. The court is competent to consider labour claims and disputes, and its jurisdiction includes the following disputes: labour lawsuits filed by or against workers. Labour appeals filed against judgments issued in the first instance. Judgments and decisions issued by execution judges. Temporary and summary judgments. Execution judgments and judicial orders issued by the court. The court also consists of a one-day labour disputes chamber, and it is competent to consider all partial labour cases, according to the definitions, controls, and criteria that a decision is issued by the Judicial Council.


    Court of Arbitration for Sport

    Personal Status Court for Civil Family Court

    Under Law No. (14) of 2021 regarding the personal status of non-Muslim foreigners in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, a specialized court was established to hear personal status cases of non-Muslim foreigners, with jurisdiction to consider all cases related to personal status and inheritance issues of non-Muslim foreigners who have a domicile, place of residence, or place of work in the emirate. The court is formed of a single judge, and the judge may be a non-Muslim, and all forms and procedures of the court are bilingual, in Arabic and English. The establishment of a specialized court to consider personal status cases of non-Muslim foreigners in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi aims to provide a flexible and sophisticated judicial mechanism for adjudicating personal status disputes of foreigners and to enhance the emirate’s position and global competitiveness as one of the most attractive destinations for talents and human competencies, in addition to the emirate’s leadership in issuing the first civil law to regulate family matters for foreigners in accordance with international best practices and ensure the foreigner's right to be subject to an internationally recognized law close to it in terms of culture, customs and language, and to achieve and protect the best interests of the child, especially in the event of parental separation.


    Execution Chamber

    It is impossible to think of a right that cannot be enforced, which highlights the significance of execution. As a result, the execution chamber is concerned with carrying out court orders, executive orders, and settlements and agreements that have been approved by the judiciary.
